Rural Agricultural Finance and Food Security

Under the Rural Agricultural Finance and Food Security (RAFFS) Practitioner Learning Program (PLP), SEEP has been working with five industry leaders to document best practices and lessons learned on rural agricultural finance programs. The PLP examined various approaches to, and the interconnection of, rural agricultural finance and household well-being, including food security.

Although the PLP is coming to an end soon, we invite you to continue the dialogue surrounding RAF and food security with other industry practitioners.

Many of the lessons learned from the recent financial crisis has raised concerns about the limited level of financial capability in rural farming populations. e.g. in a small rural farming community in Ghana, a small percentage know about a bank/savings account. As a component in responsible finance, the need to develop financial capability, consumer awareness and protection programs especially for rural agr-finance access is critical. Any expert advice or comments here?

Hello!  I am happy to announce that the entire suite of electronic learning products from SEEP's Rural Agricultural Finance and Food Security (RAFFS) Practitioner Learning Program (PLP) is now available on our website! They include:

  1. A screencast looking at the relationship between value-added services and food security for dairy farmers in rural India;
  2. A blog examining the relationship between village savings and loan associations (VSLAs) and food security;
  3. A video documenting the effect that value-added services have on food security for rural houses in south India;
  4. A podcast discussing the potential benefits of a loan guarantee financial product for rural livestock traders in Kenya;
  5. An online comparative case study assessing the impact of warehouse receipts and delayed marketing on agricultural value chains and food security in India.

I encourage you to check them all out!

PLP is good program, and I have implemented micro credit program through Relief international in Pakistan. We providing water buffalo to women, and its result was 100%. Micro credit really transform the live of marginalized people but if product is define well and it feasibility and value chain and market strategy is developed and established. what gape i have observed in MFIs is that they are concern with finance and not with product. if MFIs do more concentrate on product then its results will be highly fruitful and result oriented. Any how PLP is really and excellent program and forum which share a rich experience and knowledge of practitioners.

Welcome to all of the new members of the RAFFS group on SEEPcommunity!

I am happy to announce that another learning product from the RAFFS PLP is now available on SEEP's website (http://seepnetwork.org/Pages/RAFFS.aspx).  It is a podcast documenting the experience of Food for the Hungry-Kenya as they worked with a local bank to develop a financial product aimed specifically at rural cattle traders in Northern Kenya.

I would love to hear your comments about this and the other two learning products that have been produced so far by the RAFFS PLP!

Happy new year to all members and this year should be a year of great success and promoting development through rural agriculture finance and food security. The issue of Finance for rural farmers is a great challenge which needs to be addressed by all if we want to achieve sustainable livelihood security. This should be done using participatory approach where rural people will be active participants and contribute to the planning and implementation. As practitioners, we should come out with sustainable ways of financing agriculture without necessary promoting poverty.
