Greenwashing: Companies ‘going green’ with consumer dollars

You know when you visit your local grocery store and you are approached by one or more people trying to coax you in to donating for a cause, a charity or to send some disadvantaged youth to school? Well last week I was somewhere in the O.C. en route to La Mirada and I needed to make a quick stop at a Ralph’s to pick up some flowers. On my way in I was greeted by a bright-eyed teenager who handed me paper entitled “What is Greenwashing?” I had no idea and perhaps you don’t either. Nonetheless I…See More

Social Collateral in Developed Countries vs. Developing Countries

Is social collateral, as it pertains to reducing loan default risk, more affective in developed countries or developing countries? The reason I pose this question is because I work for a nonprofit CDFI in South Los Angeles that for years has been offering a micro-business program Capital Partners based off the micro lending platform originated by Muhammad Yunus of Grameen Bank. Our program starts participants off with a loan of $500 at the first level. Once that loan is paid in full one can…See More

About Me
Hello SEEP Community,

Over my 4+ years of work experience I have managed to develop specific track record in community and economic development. I launched my career as a financial planning counselor for Community Financial Resource Center (CFRC), a nonprofit organization and Community Development Financial Institution in South Los Angeles which facilitates asset development services. As my first assignment at CFRC, I co-facilitated a teachers’ mortgage assistance program, LATMAP, which provided first-time homebuyer counseling to hundreds of teachers and LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) staff each year. In addition, I counseled clients in foreclosure/loss mitigation and refinancing out of predatory loans.

Next, I was given an opportunity to design and launch CFRC’s first financial education program, Ca Ching! The bilingual program included a collaborative relationship with AXA Financial Advisors.

In February of 2009 I was contracted by CFRC to lead their involvement in the "Bank on L.A." initiative, in collaboration with the Office of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and United Way of Greater Los Angeles. Bank on L.A. is a campaign that raises awareness about the benefits of banking and directs participants to responsible financial institutions in traditionally underserved areas. The initiative is based on similar "Bank on" efforts in other cities with high concentrations of “unbanked” households.

From my role in the Bank on LA, I was then selected to represent the agency in a city-wide collaborative, originated from the City's Community Development Department. The initiative calls to convert agencies into FamilySource Centers; community one-stop hubs of comprehensive services and resources for low income households. My responsibility is to coordinate and facilitate asset development and financial education for South Los Angeles communities via this collaborative.

I meet regularly with community partners in coming up with strategies and innovative methods to tackle that asset deficiency problem that is rampant in our communities. Some of these projects include micro enterprise, mobile banking/texting, community local trade systems, technology literacy for personal finance, and other programs. When I am not developing programs, attending meetings, developing financial education material and doing other asset building related activities I teach a weekly money management and consumer finance course in English and in Spanish at 1736 Family Crisis Center. I also do workshops in English or in Spanish for several other organizations throughout Los Angeles.

I have put together financial empowerment programs for Midnight Mission in Los Angeles as well as other organizations. I am bilingual in English and Spanish and am Certified Educator in Personal Finance. I sit on the FDIC's Alliance for Economic Inclusion work group and Los Angeles Financial Literacy Council.

How to Reach the 'Unsaved'

According to a study by the Census Bureau more than one in four working American families is low-income. Despite working the equivalent of 1 1/4 full-time jobs these families cannot break through to moderate-income levels. Accumulation of assets is a doorway out of financial strife but the challenge is amassing the funds necessary to engage in wealth-building opportunities.

Does "Bank On LA" give something to Bank on?

Approaching a year since its inception the Bank on LA campaign is gearing up to offer its results to the Mayor’s office and other involved entities of the private/public sector. With curiosity abound, concerns of how effective the Villaraigosa-backed initiative has faired against the challenging economic climate can be felt swelling the hallways and boardrooms of financial institutions across Los Angeles County. There is no doubt that the campaign has made some impact or influence on the… Continue
