About Me
I am co-facilitator of SEEP's Poverty Outreach Working Group and very excited for a great 2011! I am an education specialist who wandered into the world of financial services several years ago and hasn’t left. I bring my experience as a trainer, teacher and curriculum developer. I am also an e-learning developer --- I made the online PAT training course at www.povertytools.org/PATtraining which is free, covers all aspects of survey implementation and is widely applicable beyond the PAT. Beyond that, I am a researcher and evaluator, currently developing an M&E system for a small foundation that is developing a FREE online university. I was a math professor for several semesters and have lived in Micronesia & Korea. I’ve also done a lot of work with underserved youth, primarily in the US, and it is with those faces in mind that I now strive to work find and share ways to help move the poorest out of poverty and into better lives. (See my LinkedIn profile: http://www.linkedin.com/in/margaretrichards - you should create one too!)
Describe your interests in development
What else am I going to do with my time? We spend over 1/3 of our lives working --- as a mathematician, I believe in efficiency and thus it would be a waste if I spent all that time only benefiting myself. I truly believe that education changes the world. Can you name one problem in the world that isn't directly brought about by lack of education or ignorance that breeds intolerance?

Financial Literacy as non-financial service?

I am at the SPTF Annual meeting and just heard someone talk about how "Nonfinanical services, like financial literacy" are also important.  How is it that some level of financial education is not offered to everyone the first time they enter the formal financial system? Why is it considered 'something nice' rather than an essential part of the financial sector?  Everything has a cost - but we wouldn't give someone a car without teaching them how to drive.See More
