Is Microfinance a Hack? I Beg to Differ

The recent crisis in Andhra Pradesh, India triggered a rigorous debate about the merits and viability of microfinance as a tool for poverty alleviation. Stories of over-indebted borrowers committing suicide and microfinance institutions charging exorbitant, sky-high interest rates are rampant in the media. Looking at the facts and studying the alternatives, I believe the skepticism surrounding microfinance is premature and the hostility towards it is somewhat misplaced. First, let’s take a…See More

Microinsurance's potential

A new Swiss Re sigma study just came out, titled "Microinsurance - Risk Protection for 4 Billion People".http://media.swissre.com/documents/sigma6_2010_en.pdf As someone interested in and working on Microinsurance, this was fascinating to me -- really validated what myself and my coworkers at Avana Microinsurance are trying to achieve. But I wanted to start a discussion surrounding other peoples' thoughts on microinsurance as a…See More

Social Business - A field of dreams? Or the next big thing?

Conferences can be a good indicator of the health of an industry, and by that measure the emerging sector of “social entrepreneurship” appears to be booming. The third annual SOCAP conference last week in San Francisco drew more than 1,300 people paying as much as $1,395 a ticket, and you could feel the energy among the amalgam of philanthropists, foundations, investors and idealistic entrepreneurs. (NY Times / Bay Citizen)Avana mentions this story in our blog post this week entitled "Field of…See More

Marketing Microinsurance

We always get some great discussions going on the SEEP Network with our blog posts, so I'd like to post our most recent blog and hear everyone's thoughts!!! www.avanamicroinsurance.com While microlending continues to grow in popularity, microinsurance hasn’t garnered the same popular support. Why?? The reason for this has nothing to do with the relative merits of either financial service as a tool of economic empowerment –surely, if one is…See More

(Micro)Insurance 101

Would love to get everyone's thoughts on this blog post by Avana Microinsurance on what exactly IS Microinsurance. There is some food for thought here that can lead to a good discussion. Thanks!---A question asked time and time again by Avana Microinsurance readers and followers is “What exactly is microinsurance??” So let’s tackle it…Microinsurance is a term used to describe any insurance policy that is priced to be affordable to a person living in poverty.  It can include insurance against…See More

Is Microinsurance an important next step in Microfinance provision?

Microfinance is becoming incredibly popular in both international development circles as well as with the public at large. The popularity of organizations such as Kiva.org, Grameen Foundation, SKS and others make it seem like microfinance is a panacea for development, that it will solve global poverty. But what happens if the loan recipient - a mother, for example, who used her loan to buy more cattle and successfully start a milk production microbusiness - unexpectedly dies? Or gets injured?…See More

MicroWHAT?? From Microfinance to Microinsurance

[From Avana Microinsurance]First things first: “What exactly is microinsurance” and “How is microinsurancedifferent from microfinance?“By now, almost everyone has heard about microfinance, right? The provision of small loans to poor people, frequently women, has become a well-known tool of economic development. Millions of microfinance investment dollars– first from nonprofit and multilateral development institutions, and later from social and even commercial investors– have been deployed to…See More

small SEEP fund

Greetings

May we think for small SEEP fund? Each member could save small weekly/fornightly from her/his own luxury even daily expenditure. Each member would be in thinking how much I could be less expensive. I do believe we could save minimum from our own expenditure may be quarter/half/one dollar weekly. That would be collected duly and used for piloting new idea in one village any corner of globe.

NB.

  1. Fund must be saved from daily expenditure (reduce cellphone call, private car use, fast food, junk food etc etc) that wouldn’t hamper other family member life. Member like me ultra poor could save from his/her own travel cost 05 to 10 BDT and weekend it wuld one dollar easily.
  2. Now we are 2746 member and weekly we could have $2746 amount and monthly $10984. By $2000 we could start work any one village of third world country.

Let's we try to save one Taka/dollar/pound/yen ............FROM daily expenditure just remind self, “let live simply that other could simply live.”
