Indian Central Bank releases the board sub-committee report on microfinance regulation

It was much awaited. Everyone including Central Bank (Reserve Bank of India), finance ministry, banks, investors and other provincial governments have been buying time in the name of this report's arrival. As some of you may know RBI has constituted this sub-committee headed by an eminent chartered accountant Mr. Malegam in the aftermath of Andhra Pradesh government's promulgation of infamous microfinance ordinance that has practically brought the industry to standstill, contributed to soaring…See More

Elizabeth Rhyne on Bloomberg about microfinance

Beth Rhyne Managing Director Center for Financial Inclusion defends on this Bloomberg TV program that microfinance is an important intervention and MFIs in India charge lower rates than anywhere else in the world. She also explains why the rates are usually high in microfinance. She says Andhra Pradesh crisis is largely politically motivated and have little do with MFIs actions although there are cases of excessive growth witnessed in some pockets but market gap is also quite high in India. Crisis situation in Andhra Pradesh refuses to die down

It all started with MFIs creating an unrealistic growth machine out of a simple idea pioneered by Bangladeshi economist turned banker for the poor Prof. Md. Yunus. SKS has rocked the stock market with unprecedented IPO, made the promoter, some employees and individual investors millionaires and billionaires overnight. Everyone took it by surprise including the central bank, government of India and most of all Andhra Pradesh politicians and media.

Andhra Pradesh which is the most… Continue

Microfinance Business Environment

Several factors are important for privately provided microfinance to thrive and develop successfully in any country. Key among them I think are:

1. Supportive regulatory framework that recognizes microfinance practitioners as important players and provides space for operation under laws of land;

2. Enabling policy environment with economic development policies that prioritize financial inclusion and encourages private sector players to participate;

3. Minimal infrastructure that… Continue

Extremism and Microfinance

There are some interesting turn of events in India in past month in connection with extremists' involvement in microfinance. Two specific events make it interesting. One in North Eastern part of the country, very far from Andhra Pradesh (AP) where currently a crisis is unfolding, and the other right in the state of AP.

NDTV, a major TV news channel, reported on 9th Nov 2010 that largest militant outfit in North Eastern region United National Liberation Front, have been using… Continue

small SEEP fund

Greetings

May we think for small SEEP fund? Each member could save small weekly/fornightly from her/his own luxury even daily expenditure. Each member would be in thinking how much I could be less expensive. I do believe we could save minimum from our own expenditure may be quarter/half/one dollar weekly. That would be collected duly and used for piloting new idea in one village any corner of globe.

NB.

  1. Fund must be saved from daily expenditure (reduce cellphone call, private car use, fast food, junk food etc etc) that wouldn’t hamper other family member life. Member like me ultra poor could save from his/her own travel cost 05 to 10 BDT and weekend it wuld one dollar easily.
  2. Now we are 2746 member and weekly we could have $2746 amount and monthly $10984. By $2000 we could start work any one village of third world country.

Let's we try to save one Taka/dollar/pound/yen ............FROM daily expenditure just remind self, “let live simply that other could simply live.”
