Call for nominations: 2011 Voices of Courage Awards

Each year, the Women's Refugee Commission's Voices of Courage Awards honors individual refugee, internally displaced and asylum-seeking women and young people who are working on behalf of their peers. Now, you have the opportunity to nominate those you admire who are developing or leading programs that benefit urban refugees.
Did you know that more than 50 percent of the world’s 10.5 million displaced people are now living in cities and not in refugee camps?

Despite their surroundings, urban refugees have limited access to everyday necessities such as food and shelter. Trying to make ends meet in a foreign city is hard; urban refugees often lack the necessary job skills and face legal, cultural and linguistic barriers to making a living.

Help recognize outstanding individuals supporting this neglected population.

Two refugee, internally displaced or asylum-seeking women or young people (up to age 30) will be selected to receive the 2011 Voices of Courage Award. The honorees’ organizations will each receive a $5,000 grant from the Women’s Refugee Commission to support the incredible work supporting displaced people
in their communities.

The deadline for nominations is December 15, 2010. Read here for more details on how to nominate a potential honoree!
